It’s easy to think of a candle as simply wax, a wick and a flame. But a beeswax candle has a much more interesting story. Its journey begins long before it ever reaches your home—with thousands of tiny bees, a remarkable piece of honeycomb and a natural material that has been used for candles for centuries.

It All Starts With the Bees 🐝

Before there is a candle, there is a bee.

Honeybees produce beeswax naturally to build the honeycomb inside their hive. The honeycomb is where bees raise their young and store their honey, making beeswax an incredibly important part of life inside the hive. Worker bees produce tiny flakes of wax, which they soften and shape into the familiar hexagonal honeycomb pattern.

But the story starts even earlier, out in the flowers.

To make just one teaspoon of honey, honeybees may need to visit thousands of flowers. Depending on the type of flower, the weather and the distance from the hive, a single bee may visit hundreds of flowers during one foraging trip. Over her lifetime, one worker bee may produce only about one-twelfth of a teaspoon of honey.

That means a teaspoon of honey represents the combined work of many bees, each making countless trips between the hive and the flowers. Bees may travel several kilometres from the hive in search of nectar and pollen. They use the nectar they collect to make honey, and the honey provides the energy the colony needs to survive. The beeswax is then produced by worker bees and used to build the honeycomb where that honey is stored.

So when you hold a beeswax candle, you’re holding a material connected to thousands of flowers, countless bee journeys and the combined work of an entire colony.

Pretty amazing for something so simple.

From Honeycomb to Candle Wax

Once beeswax is collected, it needs to be carefully cleaned and filtered before it can become candle wax.

At Cheeky Bee, we use 100% pure cappings beeswax.

Cappings beeswax comes from the thin outer layer of wax that bees use to seal the honey inside the honeycomb once it is fully ripened. When the honey is ready to be harvested, the beekeeper gently removes these wax cappings from the outer edges of the honeycomb. Because we use only the cappings, we are not taking the main structure of the hive. The bees keep their honeycomb, brood area and essential hive framework. This allows us to collect the wax while helping maintain a healthy, functioning hive.

Using cappings beeswax is one of the ways we respect the bees and their home. The colony’s important comb remains in place, and the bees can continue using it to raise young, store honey and carry on their work.

Natural beeswax can contain bits of honeycomb, pollen, propolis and other natural materials from the hive. Careful filtering helps remove these impurities while preserving the beautiful qualities of the beeswax itself. We don’t add scents, dyes or colours to our natural beeswax candles. We believe the natural character of beeswax is something to appreciate.

Then Comes the Candle Maker

This is where the bees leave the story—and we take over.

Turning beeswax into a beautiful candle takes more than simply melting wax and pouring it into a mould. There is a lot of thought that goes into creating a candle that burns properly.

The size and shape of the candle matter. The wax matters and perhaps most importantly, the wick matters.

At Cheeky Bee, our candles are handmade with careful attention to how all of these elements work together.

The Little Thing That Makes a Big Difference: The Wick

A candle can have beautiful wax, but without the right wick, it isn’t going to burn properly. Our wicks are hand-rolled from all-natural plant fibre, and we carefully roll them to the proper size for the particular candle they will be used in.

Why go to all that trouble? Because the wick needs to work together with the size and shape of the candle.

Our wicks are sized so that the flame can reach the proper edge of the candle as it burns. This allows the wax to melt evenly across the surface rather than leaving a thick wall of unused wax around the outside. And that matters. As the beeswax softens, the sides of the candle can be gently folded—or, as we like to say, hugged—toward the centre. This helps keep the candle level and allows more of that beautiful beeswax to become part of the burn.

It’s one of those little details that you might not notice when you first look at a candle. But once you understand it, you realize just how much thought goes into making a Cheeky Bee candle.

And Then There Was Light

After the bees have done their work, the beeswax has been carefully prepared, and the candle has been handmade with the right wick, there is only one thing left to do.

Light it.

This is where the whole journey comes together. The beeswax that began inside a hive becomes something that creates warmth and light in your home. Maybe you light it while you’re having dinner or part of a quiet evening. Maybe you’re having friends over or it’s sitting on the table during a special celebration.
